The housing project is located at the foot of the Kappelberg in Fellbach, where a complex of multi-storey residential buildings had been demolished as part of the construction process.
The new buildings offered the opportunity to break away from the tradition of row housing developments in Fellbach and create an ensemble with simple structures that forms a natural centre as an informal meeting space for the housing cooperative. The individual buildings do not differ in scale and volume from the neighbouring buildings.
Four residential buildings with a shared underground car park were erected, all three-storey, only the building in the north-east as a four-storey structure. Thus forming a small high point of the complex, which plays with different entrance and building heights based on the topography of the terrain.
The L-shaped structure in the west of the site was given a recess that generates a communal roof terrace and at the same time adapts the scale of the ensemble to that of the neighbouring children's house.
The courtyard was designed as a commons for shared use. All the houses are accessed via arcades, which are oriented towards the centre either directly or via a building incision; on the opposite side, the buildings were each given a generous balcony strip.
The façades of the buildings are clad in pre-greyed timber. Contrasting, dark fibre cement panels are used in the arcades, where non-combustible cladding is required for fire safety reasons. On the balcony side, a vertical louvre structure ensures the required thermal insulation in summer.
In the area between the buildings an underground car park is situated. The access road for the underground car park is located in the centre of the northern boundary of the property. Thus avoiding traffic conflicts with vehicles from Gartenstrasse.
The sceme results in 79 flats with 1-4 rooms. The majority of the units are privately financed, while a small number (1-bedroom flats) are subsidised in accordance with the rental housing financing scheme of the state of Baden-Württemberg. A communal room including a kitchenette, which can also be used as a guest flat, is provided for the residents in direct connection to the communal roof terrace.
